Instagram Carousel vs Reel: Which Gets More Reach?

Neither format wins everything. In Socialinsider's analysis of 21.3 million Instagram posts, Reels earned more comments and shares per follower, carousels earned more saves, and images trailed on all three. Pick the format by the action you need, and treat any reach claim without a stated sample with caution.

TL;DR: Carousels: saves and depth. Reels: comments and shares. Images: quick likes. The only large dataset we could open reports action rates, not reach, so we do not claim a reach winner.
Engagement rate by action is the number of comments, shares or saves on a post divided by the account's follower count, averaged over posts. Socialinsider calculates it per post and averages within each format.

What does the largest dataset say about carousels and Reels?

Socialinsider's engagement report covers 21,286,536 organic posts from brand accounts with 1K to 1M followers, active October 2025 to March 2026. It states that carousels lead on overall engagement but gives no number for that. It does give per-action rates, plotted below. The page contradicts itself in places (it mentions 15 million posts in its introduction, and its method says accounts over 100K followers were excluded while its table includes them), so use the pattern, not the decimals.

What did we measure ourselves?

We compared formats on a single 131K-follower account in one week (4 posts per format, logged-out reading on 2026-10-07). It is a tiny sample, so read it as a pattern worth checking, not a law.

FormatMedian likesMedian comments
Reel121141
Carousel154148
Single image27726

Original information. On that account, single images won on likes but drew about five times fewer comments than reels and carousels. Posts that carried a "comment" call to action averaged 178 likes and 154 comments, against 267 likes and 77 comments for posts without one. So the call to action traded reach for comments. Both the 21-million-post data and our small sample point the same direction: format changes what people do, not just how many do it.

Is there a trick that gives carousels a second chance?

Adam Mosseri said in an Instagram Reel that when someone sees a carousel but does not swipe, Instagram will often show it again starting from the second slide (reported by CC Startup on 21 Oct 2024; we did not find the original Reel). That is a reason to write slide 2 so it works as a second cover. In the 1,064 slides we measured, operators mostly do not do this: slide 2 was darker than the cover in 52% of 117 decks and was otherwise indistinguishable from other inside slides. That measures what people do, not what works.

Can one idea become both formats?

Yes. The Content Engine turns each idea into one carousel and two reels from the same plan, so you can test formats on one idea instead of guessing. See how to make reels without filming.

Frequently asked questions

Do carousels get more reach than Reels?

We cannot say. The largest dataset we could open, Socialinsider's 21 million posts, publishes action rates but no reach figures, and the reach numbers circulating elsewhere come from sources without a stated method.

Which format gets more comments?

In Socialinsider's data Reels have the highest comment rate at 0.06%, then carousels at 0.04%. In our small one-account sample reels and carousels drew about five times the comments of single images.

Which format gets more saves?

Carousels, at a 0.05% save rate in Socialinsider's report, against 0.04% for Reels and 0.02% for images.

Should I post carousels or Reels?

Use both, and decide per post by the action you want: saves from a carousel, comments and shares from a Reel. One idea can be rendered as both.

The Content Engine researches a niche, writes post ideas and renders carousels (PNG) and reels (MP4) on your own computer. USD 67 one time, 14-day refund. It needs a paid Claude plan (Pro or higher), Node.js and FFmpeg, and we have tested it on Windows only.
