Claude Code Instagram Carousel Skills: Free vs Paid
A free Claude Code skill is enough if you want one carousel in one style. Carousel Lite, a free skill we read on GitHub, writes the slides and renders 1080x1440 PNGs in a single built-in style. A paid kit is only worth it if you need several looks, reels, batch rendering or niche research.
What does a free Claude carousel skill do?
Carousel Lite is representative. According to its GitHub page it asks Claude to write the hook, content slides and call to action, asks you to approve the copy, renders each slide as a 1080x1440 PNG, and opens the folder. It offers one built-in style, names only Mac and Linux, needs Node.js 18 or newer, and showed 1 star and no stated licence when we read it. It also points to a paid community for multiple styles, AI cover images, hook templates, topic brainstorming and brand kits. That is a normal pattern: a free skill as the first rung, a paid product above it.
How does it compare with a paid kit?
| Carousel Lite (free skill) | The Content Engine (USD 67 once) | |
|---|---|---|
| Output | Carousel PNGs, 1080x1440 | Carousel PNGs 1080x1350, plus two reels (MP4) per idea, plus captions |
| Looks | One built-in style | 11 ready-made looks listed in its README, plus describe-your-own |
| Research | Topic brainstorming sits in the paid tier | Verify a niche, scout ideas from public Instagram pages, plan, then render |
| Platforms | Mac and Linux named | Tested on Windows; Mac not tested by us |
| Needs | Claude Code, Node.js 18+ | Paid Claude plan, Node.js 20+, FFmpeg; Python for voiceover reels |
| Licence stated | None visible on the page | Included files carry their own licence notes |
| Posts for you | No | No |
When is the free skill enough?
If you post a carousel now and then, one clean style is fine, and a free skill costs nothing but your time. Try it first. You will learn quickly whether you want more.
When is a paid kit worth considering?
- You post in batches and want ten carousels from one plan, not ten separate chats.
- You want reels from the same idea.
- You need more than one look, for example one per client.
- You want help choosing a niche before you design anything.
If none of those apply, you do not need a paid kit. We would rather say so than sell you one.
How do you vet a Claude skill before installing it?
- Read SKILL.md and any scripts first. A skill is instructions plus code that runs on your machine.
- Check the licence and the requirements (platform, Node.js version).
- Look at what it will ask Claude to run. Approve each command instead of auto-approving.
- Look at the output on your own topic before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Claude skill for Instagram carousels?
Yes. Carousel Lite on GitHub renders one carousel style as 1080x1440 PNGs from a topic. It lists Mac and Linux as supported and Node.js 18 or newer.
What does a paid carousel kit add over a free skill?
Typically more looks, reels, batch rendering and research. Whether you need them depends on how many posts you make each week.
Do I need a paid Claude plan for these skills?
Claude Code needs a Claude plan. The Content Engine documents a paid plan (Pro or higher) as a requirement.
Is it safe to install a Claude skill from GitHub?
Read the SKILL.md and scripts first, check the licence, and approve commands one by one. A skill runs instructions and code on your own computer.
The Content Engine researches a niche, writes post ideas and renders carousels (PNG) and reels (MP4) on your own computer. USD 67 one time, 14-day refund. It needs a paid Claude plan (Pro or higher), Node.js and FFmpeg, and we have tested it on Windows only.
