# Pick the right tool

Short answer: a free Claude skill is enough if you only need to write carousel text; a monthly SaaS is easier if you do not want to install anything; Canva by hand is fine for a handful of posts. The engine fits when you want research, carousels and reels in bulk and are happy to run it on your own computer.

## At a glance

| | Content Engine | Free Claude skill | Monthly SaaS | Canva by hand |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Price model | USD 67 once (USD 47 founding), plus your Claude plan | Free, plus your Claude plan | Monthly subscription, often with credits | Free tier or monthly Pro |
| Where it runs | Your computer | Your computer | Their servers | In the browser |
| Setup | 20 to 40 minutes, Windows tested | Usually a few minutes | Sign up and go | Sign up and go |
| Niche research | Yes, with source links | Typically not | Varies | No |
| Carousels in bulk | Yes | Often one at a time | Varies | By hand |
| Reels | Yes, two per idea | Typically not | Varies | By hand |
| Posts for you | No | No | Some do | Built-in scheduler on some plans |

## Versus a free Claude skill

Free Claude skills exist and some are good. Most cover the writing step: you give a topic and get slide text or a rendered carousel. If that is all you need, use one and keep your money.

The engine goes further in three places: it starts with research on your niche, it writes a queue of ideas instead of one, and it renders reels as well as carousels. If you do not need those, a free skill is the better deal. We wrote the longer version here: [Claude Code Instagram carousel skills, free vs paid](https://content-engine-emh.pages.dev/blog/claude-code-instagram-carousel-skill-free-vs-paid/).

## Versus a monthly SaaS

A hosted post-maker needs no install and works on any device. That is a real advantage, especially if you do not want to touch Node.js or FFmpeg. The trade-off is the cost model: a subscription keeps billing, and credits can run out mid-batch.

The engine is one payment and renders on your computer, so volume costs you time, not credits. The catch is your own Claude plan and the setup. Pick the SaaS if convenience matters more than price per post.

## Versus Canva by hand

Canva is excellent for editing one post exactly the way you want it. If you make a few posts a week and enjoy designing, stay there. The cost is time: each carousel is built slide by slide.

The engine is for volume: you review a queue of finished posts instead of building each one. If you want hand-editable files, [Viral Post Kit](https://content-engine-emh.pages.dev/products/) ships Canva-importable (.pptx) templates. ## When not to buy

- You only need slide text: use a free skill.
- You do not want to install software: use a hosted tool.
- You are on a Mac and cannot afford to troubleshoot: it is untested there.
- You want a tool that posts for you: this one does not.
