# What Is a Comment-Keyword DM Funnel? Definition, Mechanics and Meta Rules

**A comment-keyword DM funnel is an Instagram automation in which a post asks viewers to comment a chosen word and a tool then sends each commenter one private direct message, usually a link or file. Under Meta's documentation, that private reply must go out within 7 days of the comment, and only one message is allowed until the person replies.**

> **Short answer:** Comment, webhook, one private reply. Meta documents one message per commenter, a 7-day window and a 24-hour follow-up window after the person responds. Meta's engagement-bait page defines requests for comments as a category of its own; the page we read says nothing about ranking penalties, so the risk is unquantified, not zero.

> **A comment-keyword DM funnel** is a three-part loop: a keyword call to action in a post, an automated trigger on the comment that contains it, and one private reply delivering what the post promised.

## How does a comment-keyword DM funnel work, step by step?

1. The post or reel tells viewers to comment a keyword, for example the word GUIDE.
2. A viewer comments the keyword on the post.
3. Meta sends your app a webhook notification for the comment (subscribed fields: `comments`, and `live_comments` for Live).
4. Your tool matches the keyword in the comment text.
5. Your tool calls the messages endpoint of the account with the comment's ID to send one private reply.
6. The commenter receives the message. If they answer, your tool may send follow-ups for 24 hours after that answer.

Meta states that the webhook fires when someone comments on the app user's post, reel, story, Live or ad post.

## What are the parts of a comment-keyword DM funnel?

| Part | What it does | Meta mechanism |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Keyword call to action | Tells the viewer which word to comment | None. It is caption or on-screen text |
| Comment | The trigger event | Comment on a post, reel, story, Live or ad post |
| Webhook | Delivers the comment and its ID to your tool | Fields `comments` and `live_comments` |
| Private reply | One direct message to the commenter | Messages endpoint of the app user's Instagram account, using the comment ID |
| Follow-up | Further messages in the same conversation | Allowed only if the recipient responds, within 24 hours of the response |
| Deliverable | The link, PDF or template you promised | Your own hosting |

## What are Meta's documented limits on private replies?

| Rule | What the documentation says |
| --- | --- |
| Messages per comment | Only one message can be sent to the commenter |
| Time window | Within 7 days of the comment's creation time |
| Follow-ups | Only if the recipient responds, and within 24 hours of the response |
| Live video | Private replies can only be sent during the live broadcast; after it ends they cannot be sent |
| Permissions (Instagram Login) | `instagram_business_basic` and `instagram_business_manage_comments` |
| Permissions (Unified Login) | `instagram_basic`, `instagram_manage_comments`, `instagram_manage_messages` |
| Per-hour rate limit | Not stated on the page we read |

The permission list is summarised from the page and differs by login flow, so read the current page before building.

## What does Meta say about asking people to comment?

Meta's Transparency Center defines engagement bait as posts that explicitly request engagement, such as votes, shares, comments, tags, likes or other reactions, for purposes other than a specific call to action such as finding missing people or property, raising money or sharing a petition. The wording on that page refers to Facebook, and it makes no statement about ranking or demotion. Separately, Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines list among low-quality content "coordinated comment networks intended to artificially drive engagement and distribution". A keyword call to action is not a coordinated network, but the two pages show the direction of Meta's concern.

Our reading: no page we opened prohibits a keyword call to action or states a penalty for one. Nothing we opened says it is safe at scale either.

## Which call-to-action style fits which mechanism?

| Style | Example | Does the private-reply API fire? | Trade-off |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Comment keyword | Comment GUIDE | Yes, it is a comment | Matches the mechanism; it is also an explicit request for comments |
| DM keyword | DM me GUIDE | No, the documented private-reply trigger is a comment (our reading) | Needs a person or a separate responder to answer incoming DMs |
| Link in bio | Link in bio | Not applicable | Lowest risk and weakest conversion path |

The middle row is our inference from the documentation, not a statement Meta makes. Test it from a second account.

## What is a compliance checklist for a comment-keyword DM funnel?

1. Send one private reply per comment and never a second message before the person replies.
2. Send it within 7 days of the comment; for Live, send it during the broadcast.
3. Request only the permissions your login flow lists, through your own Meta app or a provider that uses the official API.
4. Make the deliverable exist before the first post. A keyword that promises a file you have not made is a broken promise, not a funnel.
5. Keep the keyword call to action to a minority of posts (our rule, not Meta's).
6. Test the full path from a second account before publishing.
7. Re-read the private replies page before each build; the limits are Meta's to change.

Items 4 to 6 are our working rules. Items 1 to 3 restate Meta's documentation.

## Is the pattern common?

Yes. We loaded 24 candidate Instagram captions on 2026-09-27 and confirmed 22 that used the comment-keyword pattern, across nursing education, aviation, language learning, teaching, art, fitness and personal finance. Three of the 22 gated a paid product behind the keyword. ## Frequently asked questions

**What is a comment-keyword DM funnel?**

An Instagram automation where a post asks viewers to comment a keyword and a tool sends each commenter one private direct message, typically a link or file.

**How many messages can you send per comment?**

One. Meta's private replies documentation says only one message can be sent to the commenter, within 7 days of the comment. Follow-ups are allowed only if the person responds, within 24 hours of the response.

**Is a comment-keyword funnel against Meta rules?**

The pages we opened do not prohibit it. Meta's engagement-bait page defines explicit requests for comments as a category and says nothing about ranking penalties; it refers to Facebook. The risk is unquantified.

**Does the funnel work with DM me KEYWORD?**

The documented private-reply trigger is a comment, so a DM-based ask needs a person or a separate responder. This is our reading of the documentation, so test it from a second account.

**Can you send private replies to Live comments?**

Yes, but only during the live broadcast. Once the broadcast ends, private replies cannot be sent, according to Meta's documentation.

**The Content Engine** researches a niche, writes post ideas and renders carousels (PNG) and reels (MP4) on your own computer. USD 67 one time, 7-day refund. It needs a paid Claude plan (Pro or higher), Node.js and FFmpeg, and we have tested it on Windows only.
