# Instagram Hashtags, Keywords and Alt Text in 2026: What Is Verifiable

**Instagram announced in December 2025 that it would gradually cap captions at five hashtags, says its Search matches query words to usernames, profile names and hashtags, and lets you replace automatic alt text with your own. It has not published that captions or alt text carry ranking weight, so those claims remain unverified.**

> **Short answer:** Verified on Instagram's own pages: keywords belong in the caption, not the comments, for Search; username and hashtag similarity are Search signals; alt text is read by screen readers. Reported by the press only: the five-hashtag cap and the Google indexing of professional accounts. Unpublished: any ranking weight for caption keywords or alt text.

> **Instagram keyword search** is the way Instagram Search matches the words a person types to account names, hashtags and suggested keywords; Instagram has not published whether caption or alt text words are weighted.

## Which hashtag, keyword and alt text claims can be verified?

| --- | --- | --- |

## How should you use keywords and hashtags given what is known?

1. Name the account and profile with the words people would search for; Search compares query words to username and profile name.
2. Write the main keyword in the first line of the caption, in plain language.
3. Keep keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments.
4. Use a small set of specific hashtags that describe the post; Instagram's own framing, as reported, is that hashtags describe what a post is about rather than raise reach.
5. Stay at or below five hashtags per caption.
6. Measure it: compare similar posts with and without a hashtag block over several weeks. We have not published a result.

## How do you write alt text?

1. Before sharing a photo: tap Next, then More options, then Write alt text, write it and tap Done. On the web, click Accessibility on the caption screen.
2. After sharing: open the photo, tap Options, Edit, then Edit Alt Text, write it and tap Done.
3. Describe what is in the image and any text on it in one or two plain sentences.
4. For a text carousel slide, use the slide's own text as the alt text.

Instagram says automatic alt text uses object recognition, and that your description will only be read if someone is using a screen reader. Write it for those readers first.

## What stays unverifiable?

- The ranking weight of caption keywords. Instagram does not publish it.
- Whether specific hashtags are "banned" or trending hashtags help.
- Whether alt text affects reach or search placement.
- Any claimed best hashtag count.
